Her tone was flat and even, her voice calm and quiet. It was obvious that she didn’t want to upset April any further, but I wondered how effective the conversation could be at this point. “Jason isn’t trying to cover for me or anyone else. What could we possibly have to gain by lying to you?”

“I don’t know,” April conceded. Her expression was still stormy, but I could tell there were doubts starting to form. She might not know what the hell was going on, but she didn’t seem so completely convinced that it was something awful anymore. “How do you explain the way you two were making out in the street, though? Especially after you told me you had feelings for Jason. Have those feelings changed in the past couple of days?”

Jason and I were watching both sisters go back and forth, our heads turning one way and then the other as if we were watching a very high stakes tennis match.

I wanted to come to Marley’s defense, to stick up for her and let April know that she needed to calm down—or at least let her know that she had the complete wrong idea.

But Marley was standing her ground, and I knew that if she really needed me, I wouldn’t have to question whether it was the right time to weigh in on the conversation.

“Nothing has changed, April,” Marley said with a sigh. “I do have

feelings for Jason. He knows that. But I also have feelings for Liam. And both of them understand that, too.”

“Well, I don’t understand,” April shot back. “How have you gone from being single for practically forever to… to this. Dating two guys at once?

Really?”

“Three, actually,” Marley said, still with a completely even, matter-of-fact tone. “I’m seeing Spencer from work, too.”

“Oh my God.” April stood up abruptly and stormed out of the room, but not before cutting her eyes at Marley one more time. “I don’t even know who you are anymore. Not the sister—or the woman—I thought you were.”

She stomped out of the room and her bedroom door slammed shut a few seconds later. I put my arm around Marley’s shoulders and she slumped against me, exhaling slowly.

“It’s okay,” I murmured, kissing the top of her head. “She might not understand now, but… she’ll come around.”

It was wishful thinking, and all three of us left in the room knew it.

“Do you want me to try talking to her again?” Jason asked, starting to get up from the couch.

Marley put her hand up, stopping him. “No. I’ll go back there and try again. She might not want to hear any of this, but she needs to hear it all from me.”

Jason and I both nodded, and Marley left my arms to slowly walk back to April’s bedroom.

The living room was completely silent as Jason and I strained to listen. I could hear muffled voices, but at least they weren’t shouting at each other.

Just a few seconds later—maybe not even a full minute—Marley reappeared in the living room with tears in her eyes.
